Nov 28, 2017 ANS review, Brain Dissection

HOSA Meeting Dec 5th, 2:45 pm Lab
Cookie Dough Delivery Nov 29 after school

Wednesday Classwork:
Review of ANS system
Brain Dissection

Wednesday-Fri Homework:
Study the nervous system unit-Prepare for your exam on Tuesday
Complete the nervous system study guide. This needs to be completed and handed in on test day to be eligible for retake.  Study HINTS at the bottom

Complete the Brain Dissection Sheets: To be handed in on MONDAY.....,.

Create Presentation ( power point, Prezi, tri-fold, Poster Board) on disease of your choice. You will present on Monday

Parkinson-Karime
Neuroblastoma-Hallie
CVA-Olivia
CP-Luka
Dementia-Will
Multiple Sclerosis-Anna
Multiple Personality Disorder-Amanda

For your presentation you will have to present on the following: see research guidelines and rubric
  • Define the disease
  • Etiology
  • Signs and Symptoms
  • Treatment and Diagnosis ( blood test, diagnostic tests, normal and abnormal ranges, interventions, symptom management)
  • Prevention/Prognosis/ Education.
  • Pictures on each page
  • Minimum of 1 video link in the presentation
For your audience you will need
  • handout, flyer form with key notes/information you want them to walk away with. This should be "highlights" not your copied power point or note cards.
  • Self-Assessment test: 10 question test to be given and collected by students after presentatin to see what they learned.
Monday Dec 3rd: Presentations
Tuesday Dec 4th : Review for Neuro Test on Wednesday
Wednesday Dec 5th:  Neuro Test

STUDY GUIDE FOR NEURO TEST WEDNESDAY
review all your notes
review packet to study for tomorrow

-Know your vocabulary words
-2 types of cells in the nervous system, roles, characteristics, functions
-divisions of the nervous system CNS/PNS  ANS/PSNS
-Membrane potential, how a neuron fires
-action potential / graded potential and the difference between them
-Synapse: Neurotransmitters ones you did your paper on
-reflex arcs, shapes of neurons  bipolar, unipolar, multipolar
-neuron pathways, nerve coverings
-protective coverings of the brain
-CSF where it's produced, purpose flow, how it returns to blood supply/absorption
-lobes/structures of the brain and their function ( brain stem, diencephalon, limbic system, pineal, optic chiasm, lobes, cerebellum, posterior/anterior pituatary and the hormones ADH, oxytocin, function where they are produced and stored)
-spinal column
-Epidural vs Spinal injection vs Lumbar Puncture
-autonomic dsyreflexia
-PERLA
- spinal vs cranial nerves where they originate from
-know the cranial nerves number and function
-ANS (SNS vs PSNS) Motor neurons, know 1 vs 2 relay neuron, adrenergic and cholinergic fibers,  norepinephrine vs acetylcholine

Competencies we are covering this week

1.  Academic competency:  understand human anatomy, physiology, common diseases and disorders and medical math principals
2.  Health maintenance practices:  differentiate between wellness and disease.  Promote disease prevention and model healthy behavior.

Learning targets:
1.  list the organs of the nervous system and describe the generalized functions of the nervous system as a whole
2.  Identify the major types of cells in the nervous system and discuss the function of each
3.  Identify the structure of a nerve/ neuron
4.  compare and contrast the differences between a sensory,  motor and interneuron
5.  identify the anatomical and functional components of a three neuron reflex arc
6.  Describe the propogation of a nerve impulse along a nerve fiber and across a synaptic cleft.
- describe the differences between a graded potiential, and and action potential of a neuron.
7.  Identify the major neurotransmitters and describe their general function
8.  Identify and describe the anatomical components of the brain and spinal cord, their functions and brain and spinal cord dysfunctions.
9.  compare and contrast the coverings of the brain and spinal cord . Describe CSF flow through the brain, and discuss related disorders .
10.  Describe the differences between cranial and peripheral nerves, and related disorders
11. Discuss the structure of the ANS , the differences in the divisions and related disorders.
